About WBCS Exam
West Bengal Public Service Commission conducts the West Bengal Civil Service exam. Candidates who are able to successfully qualify through the exam are recruited for various posts in the West Bengal Civil Service. The job profile of a selected candidate could be either of the following-
- Administration- the selected candidate may have to work in an administrative post where he/she is responsible to look after files and papers related to the Government’s official work.
- Work for development and social affairs- as a part of the senior workforce of the department, the selected candidate will have to take care of works related to the social development of the state.
- Maintaining peace and integrity- one of the main features of the employee of the government is to maintain peace and restore people’s faith in the police force. One has to ensure that there is no social disturbance amongst the citizens.
Eligibility
Interested candidates who want to appear for the WBCS Exam need to fulfil the following requirements-
- Age:
● For Group A and C, age limit is 21-36 years
● For Group B, age limit is 20-36 years
● For Group D, age limit is 21-39 years
- Must be of Indian nationality
- Has a Graduate degree from a Government recognized university, or its equivalent
- Is fluent in Bengali, speaking, writing, and reading.

The WBCS Prelims Exam syllabus is as follows-
- English Composition- 25 questions, 25 marks
- General Science- 25 questions, 25 marks
- Current events of National and International Importance- 25 questions, 25 marks
- History of India- 25 questions, 25 marks
- Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal- 25 questions, 25 marks
- Indian Polity and Economy- 25 questions, 25 marks
- Indian National Movement- 25 questions, 25 marks
- General Mental Ability- 25 questions, 25 marks
The WBCS Prelims Exam is 2 hours long.
The WBCS Mains Exam syllabus is as follows-
- Language Paper (Bengali/ Hindi/ Urdu/ Nepali/ Santhali)- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
- English Paper- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
- General Studies Paper-I- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
- General Studies Paper-II- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
- Constitution of India and Indian Economy- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
- Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
- Optional Subject (One Subject with Two papers of 200 marks each)- 400 marks for Group A and Group B
- Personality Test- 200 marks for all 4 groups individually
For the WBCS Mains Exam, candidates are given 3 hours for each paper.
