HR certifications for every level of the people profession
SHRM dominates globally. HRCI dominates in the US. Both carry weight. Here is how to choose between them and when each credential will have the highest ROI.
Both are valid first credentials, but they differ in focus. SHRM-CP (SHRM) tests behavioural and situational competencies - how you apply HR knowledge. PHR (HRCI) tests technical knowledge of US HR law and practice. SHRM-CP is generally considered more globally portable and is recognised in more countries. PHR may have higher value in strictly US-focused roles. If in doubt, SHRM-CP has a larger global community and is more widely recognised by multinational employers.
SHRM-SCP requires that you hold SHRM-CP and have 3+ years of strategic HR experience (policy development, department management, or programme strategy). Alternatively, candidates with a Master's degree in HR need 3 years of HR experience; those with a Bachelor's degree need 4 years; and those with less than a Bachelor's degree need 7 years. SHRM-SCP is a senior-level credential for HR leaders.
Yes - SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) is considered the most technically demanding HR certification, with a pass rate of around 58%. SPHR is heavily US-law focused and tests deep knowledge of strategic HR at a senior executive level. SHRM-SCP tests a broader range of global HR competencies. SPHR is highly valued in US-based senior HR roles; SHRM-SCP is more valuable in global or multi-national organisations.
